Football fans and comic book collectors are usually found at opposite ends of the social spectrum, however in 1970 their worlds collided. At the behest of the NFL, Marvel guru Stan Lee developed a gripping design for use on the front cover of "Pro!" football programs during the 1970 season. This memorable cover scene is populated with front rank Marvel super-heroes Spider-Man, Thing, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Black Panther, Iron Man and Silver Surfer along with supreme villain Dr. Doom. Additionally, the work of artist John Buscema is featured in the interior lead article of this program, with the Marvel super-heroes transformed into football legends.
This fantastic football meets comic books crossover program is discussed in the content of this humorous Stan Lee signed typed letter addressed to our consignor, who went on to do some work for Marvel in the 1970s as an editor. Typed on "Marvel Comics Group" letterhead, this fifty year old correspondence is dated "10/29/70". Lee jokes throughout the entire content of six paragraphs and a postscript, including statements regarding the football program. Other than three horizontal compacting folds, this crisp, clean letter remains very appealing with distinct content. Lee (d.2018) has signed ("9") at bottom right, with given name "Stan" only and he likely applied the direction arrow at bottom left.
Another of the letter's passages puts Lee in a prophetic light. Decades before the dawn of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Lee suggests "By then I may be a great film producer and I'll be able to turn you down in THAT medium as well as in comics". An amazing example of Stan Lee's familiar banter, this unique letter is a great testament to his fun-loving disposition. Full photo LOA from JSA.
