Description

A tidy sum was transacted with this 1877 Sergeant-at-Arms House of Representatives Counter Check signed by James A. Garfield. Signed while the Gentleman from Ohio was still a member of Congress, this antique payment voucher is made in the amount of $750. The only sitting member of the House of Representatives to win a presidential election, Garfield made this 8-1/4 x 3-1/4 check payable to himself with a ("7-8") strength endorsement. Operating without a charter, the House Sergeant-at-Arms Bank is reported as having been more of a pooled collection of accounts, that members of Congress and select others could use to deposit their pay and write checks. Due to suspected abuses, this practice is cited as having ended in 1992. A fantastic remnant of this privileged banking process, this authentic check is professionally framed and matted to 12x15, along with a 3x4 portrait engraving of Garfield. Full photo LOA from JSA.
