Consistent throughout the decades, Hollywood brings us fact and fantasy in its portrayals of heroic and tragic figures in the sporting world. These original lobby cards were displayed in theatres to hawk feature films of that genre. The standard-size 14x11” placards feature images of the screen stars, as well as titles and cast lists. All present beautifully with minor wear and evidence of display on some. Includes:
The Iron Major: (6) lobby cards from the 1943 RKO Radio Pictures biographical account of World War I veteran and college football coach Frank Cavanaugh.
Pride of the Yankees: a single 16-3/4 x 12-1/2” placard from the Spanish adaptation of Lou Gehrig’s tragic story. Images of stars Gary Cooper, Babe Ruth and Teresa Wright appear.
Champion: complete set of (8) from the 1949 boxing-themed Astor Pictures movie starring Kirk Douglas and Marilyn Maxwell.
The Pride of St. Louis: near set of (7/8) from the 1952 20th Century Fox production in which Dan Dailey portrays Cardinals great Dizzy Dean. There is faint moisture-induced discoloration/wrinkling on these.
Fear Strikes Out: near set of (7/8) from the 1957 Paramount Pictures film chronicling the saga of outfielder Jimmy Piersall, his demanding father and resultant perils. All present nicely, though there is a small tear at the lower border of card number 8.
Tall Story: complete set of (8) from the 1960 Warner Bros. film in which Jane Fonda makes her screen debut as the love interest of Custer University basketball star Anthony Perkins.
The Natural: complete set of (8) from the 1984 Tri-Star Pictures blockbuster hit starring Robert Redford as Nebraska-bred diamond phenom Roy Hobbs.
